Beyond the Surface
Beyond the Surface I’ve always wondered why women shave their legs. Who do leg hairs bother? They warm you in winter and, with the help of sweat glands, cool you in summer – if anything, they’re a win! Every time the question of shaving legs boggled my mind, the rich assumption that silky smooth legs seem to be more a need that bread on tables would settle me. It makes sense; hairy legs are not always a good look.

Projekt 23 – The Green Movement II (Series)
Projekt 23 - The Green Movement II (Series) Early in 2009, while working at an Island on the West Coast, I was preparing for my graduation. I was due to get my National Diploma in Ecotourism, and because I had had to answer so many questions about what Ecotourism is about throughout my Diploma years, I felt that as a way to celebrate my graduation, I needed to educate people about this. That’s when I started Projekt 23 – The Green Movement, a community project that deals with environmental education and the planting of indigenous trees at schools and the broader community.

3 ANC presidents and Afrikaner economic advance
3 ANC presidents and Afrikaner economic advance About a year ago, I came across a photograph by Saddi Khali on a friend’s Facebook page called blue moon rising in his album Pieces of Peace. It was love at first sight, I swear! I spent the next few weeks telling everyone who was willing to listen about his photos and sent a loud wish out into the Universe: one day, some day (before I die), I will be photographed by Saddi Khali. I imagined how amazing it must feel to have someone see me like that, turn my stretch marks into golden stripes of art, show me BEAUTIFUL.

Phillippa Yaa de Villiers
Phillippa Yaa de Villiers HOME DRENCHED

I owe this title to Makhosazana Xaba, who read the poem and suggested it. I think it works. And to Patrick Cockayne, the rogue photographer who captured the sky one stormy day… Thanks collaborators!

Reflections of a too young aunty
Reflections of a too young aunty Last year I moved in with my cousin- sister and her two daughters. We are the palace… a den of womynly queens taking care of one another. And since I moved in, I have found the most beautiful home. These grown and baby womyn have become my rock, support and medium for belly aching laughter, heart to heart stories and continuous gestures of unselfish love.

Bringing The Erotic Into Everyday
Bringing The Erotic Into Everyday Love and/or getting off with someone seems to be mainly luck and making good use of opportunity, but we all know that it’s so much more than that. Using the biggest sexual organ, the one between our ears, we listened and spoke about this magnificent theme that has given so much to literature and other art forms.

The lowdown on ‘HAIR’piness
The lowdown on ‘HAIR’piness I’m home on a Thursday evening watching my favourite TV program, America’s Next Top Model, one of the few that can make me turn down a night out in town with girlfriends, there are very few of those because I’m not a TV person, more of a pen and paper book crazy. And I watch this very pretty freckle faced woman cry her eye balls out, because the theme for the day was, “I will make you a model” makeover for all contestants, and her makeover included cutting her very long hair crop short.

Power Groups
Power Groups We now find our society organised according to foreign standards and systems, and we’ve adapted the chain from the family, the clan is now the block/street where we find ourselves living, with the township/town/neighbourhood replacing the tribe and countries replacing the nation.

Fear…and Fireworks
There is a crippling feeling that is eating away inside of me… with each second; the pain gets stronger and unbearable. With each passing day, the worry grows bigger, leaving me anxious and frustrated.

There is a crippling feeling haunting my heart, robbing me of my ambitious. A feeling so cruel, that I inevitably doubt myself.
