About the THEME
Media plays a big role in influencing people’s thinking and perceptions. Western views currently play a dominating role in shaping Afrikan people’s reality. Afrikan views tend to be portrayed in a negative way, perpetuating stereotypes about Afrikan people and some Afrikans buy into the negativity depicted about them. The reinforcement of negative stereotypes greatly affects our young people’s self-esteem and notions of identity. What kind of media do we need as Afrikan people today? What can be done to change the harmful portrayal of Afrikan people in the media? Some of us tend to blame media a lot, but do not take responsibility for changing it or creating our own; How we can we take charge in shaping media channels that are fair, balanced and representative of us?
Brother Marc Nekaitar, with vast experience in media, both in South Afrika and internationally, will present thought-provoking perspectives to guide the dialogue.
