AUTHORS AND SCHOLARS CELEBRATE A CENTURY OF PAN AFRICAN LETTERS AND CULTURAL AFFIRMATION

To celebrate a century of writing and literary intellectuals’ influence  on the liberation struggle & political impact on literary discourse & developments, the wRite associates and National Library of South Africa will host the inaugural Africa Century Literary Art and Orature: Centenary Celebrations Conversations Series, on 30th March 2012, at the National Library of South Africa, 228 Proes St, Tshwane.

Prof. Mbulelo Mzamane, a world renowned author, scholar and activist, will deliver the inaugural lecture, titled: Pan African Letters and Cultural Affirmation, with an equally stellar set of erudite respondents in academics and authors Ms Elinor Sisulu, Profs. Nhlanhla Maake, Rosemary Moeketsi and Pitika Ntuli.

The event is the first in the ambitious programme that will conclude with the 21st anniversary of the International African Writers’ Day, 7th – 10th November 2012, University of the Free State, with the intention to, as the Organisation of African Unity declared in 1991 “afford the African people a moment of pause within which to reflect on the contribution of African Writers to the development of the Continent”.

Morakabe Raks Seakhoa, Managing Director of the wRite Associates says, “it is critical that literary and other intellectuals demonstrate the sheer foresight and gravitas that have been at the base of the liberation political struggles, movements and epochs to date”.

Honorary patrons of the project are:

* Prof. Chinua Achebe, world-renowned doyen of African literature, scholar & human rights activist, National Poet Laureate, Prof Keorapetse Kgositsile; Nobel Laureate, Dr. Nadine Gordimer; internationally acclaimed musician, author and activist: Dr. Hugh Masekela, and Dr. Wangui wa Goro,  writer, researcher, translator & human rights campaigner.
