About the THEME
Healthy food has become a big concern for most Afrikan people. In South Africa, the history of imperialism and apartheid has greatly affected the diet; Along with an agenda of political oppression, the colonial masters also altered food production, designed certain food products to be part of a ‘staple diet’ and corrupted the culinary creativity and common knowledge about nutrition related to indigenous food. This has caused malnutrition, illness and death. The question is: “Do we KNOW what we are eating?” Many of us do not even know the nutritional value of food we call “traditional”. What can be done to bring back awareness of healthy, indigenous food to Afrikan people? What are some tips for improvement that can be applied in our contemporary kitchens, on small budgets?
