When it comes to hair, all women can relate, we agonize over how to wear it; toss and turn about what colour it should be; and, cringe at the thought of cutting it too short. For me too, hair has been a constant battle. I’ve gone through it all; relaxed, braided, weaved, wigged, curly, straight…the list goes on. One day during my usual salon visits, I observed closely the condition of most black women’s hair: receding hairlines, dreadlocks tightly pulled during styling, relaxers being applied on already damaged and broken hair, smoke from the heat of blow dryers. While I realize this may not be what goes on in all hair salons, what I observed that day created a discomfort in me.
I wondered if our own behavior around our hair may be the result for the many hair problems some black women are experiencing.That was my turning point. I questioned myself about what I had been doing to my hair over the years and why. It is in finding my own answers to my questions that I made a choice to go natural. I had no clue how I was going to maintain my hair but I was determined to find out. The decision to go natural was followed by a lot of research about black hair, the science of it, how to maintain it and keep it healthy. Through the research I established that black hair is unique in that no other race of people has hair as dry as ours.
Because our hair is so different, our hair care products should not be geared to a generic market! I have gone through the joys and the challenges with my hair, struggled to find suitable hair care products to use and in the process came up with my own hair care products by trying and testing a combination of good natural ingredients to care for my hair. When I started the journey, it was for me and my daughter however other people’s response to my hair and their appreciation of the knowledge I was sharing in informal platforms made me realize there is space for a bigger initiative. That’s how EARTH NATURAL HAIR PRODUCTS was born. My vision is to re-position wearing natural hair as an option for black women by sharing information about the science of black hair and how to maintain it, making appropriate hair care products available and providing support to black women who are going natural for a change.
