KUTFWASA – I’m sure some of bogobela will be offended about what I’m going to write about, but my purpose is not to offend anyone but to uplift the calling of bunyanga and bungoma. I highly respect the calling especially that I’m from a family of tinyanga and tangoma in fact Bukhosi runs in our blood, bunyanga and bungoma is part of my inheritance. Umuti is one thing that we were given and runs in our blood Makhosi Thokoza. From the look of things the calling is losing it’s dignity yet so many people are getting into it these days. Our people need to understand what a calling is. If you are called it means you are separated from other people, meaning even your lifestyle will be different you will no longer live as it pleases you but according to the spirit that is in you. One cannot be successful if he or she does not live according to the spirit in him or her. There are people who are planted by the system to destroy bungoma and bunyanga from within, they are also calling themselves bangoma and tinyanga and are being paraded by the media to destroy from within. Remember every spirit has its own culture that will influence the way you live, your food and even your dress code. Once a person dreams and his or her dreams are fulfilled then that person will think he or she is supposed to go for kutfwasa. Especially if they dream of snakes and water then they think they are supposed to be sangomas or tinyanga.
Most of my writing is based on personal experience not just by reading books and is also based from sitting down and talking with elders. Some people will always ask me “Mkhulu which books are you reading?” Personal experience and sitting down and learning from the elders is the best especially these days. There is that thing where people say unabantu abadala, the truth is that every one unabantu abadala our ancestors are living within us. Intuition is given to every person we are all supposed to have clear dreams and be able to even communicate with our ancestors through dreams and visions, but due to the lifestyles we have adopted all that is blocked especially by the types of food we eat. There is a saying that says isangoma sidle imbumba. This saying is used if you go to a sangoma and the sangoma tells you lies thus saying the sangoma is eating wrong food because eating wrong food can destroy your intuition. If we can eat right food the need to go to a sangoma can be reduced because we can be able to devine for ourselves especially through dreams. So dreaming rivers, waters and snakes does not always mean you need to go for kutfwasa. That’s why inyanga and sangoma must always eat right food and must not just eat everywhere and everything. Tangoma and tinyanga must always eat emagobongo, use lihlambo and emabaso which are in line with their spirit so that they can have clear visions and dreams. These days kutfwasa is money making scheme, most of tinyanga and tangoma who are not able to heal people have turned to be bogobela so that they can make money through kutfwasisa. So many young children have become bogobela because they cannot heal people. A person uphotfula (graduate) this month and next month he or she is now gobela, those who come to them for healing will be directed to go for kutfwasa because they aren’t able to heal.
So many people who have been initiated (batfwasa) were not supposed to be sangomas and tinyanga but they were just sick in need of healing. Some were supposed to be cleansed spiritually or have their ancestors cleansed.  As a result they cannot heal anything they only know dancing and singing bangoma and bunyanga songs and end up saying they are bogobela too. The main reason for the calling is to heal people not just to shine with the attires and show people that you are a sangoma or inyanga. I am sorry for those that I will offend its just that I have a passion for bunyanga and bungoma so I don’t want the calling to lose its dignity. It’s very imperative for a person who is supposed to go for kutfwasa to undergo kufembwa first so that all wrong spirits will be separated from that person and the right spirit will remain. Some people after the process of kufemba end up not going for kutfwasa because it was not necessary all they needed was deliverance from evil spirits. Most of ematfwasa are not even sure what spirit they have they will mention all the spirits they heard about. I know that some bogobela are part of the problem, they claim they have all the roots (Banato tonkhe timpandze) meaning they can initiate you into all spirits.
Some bogobele will claim to have all the roots (Impande) impande yemnguni, impande yemndawe, impande yemnono, impande yebalozi, impande yemandiki and impande yenzuza that is impossible; because of hunger such claims are common these days.
I meet so many people who are from such bogobela needing my help, most of them have completed kutfwasa but are more confused than even before bangene ephehlweni. Before you can be initiated you need to know which spirit you have, and from which ancestors it comes from? Does it come from the mother’s side or father’s side and such will normally come out during kufemba. You have to identify the person in your family who had the same spirit, and also know what happened to Imituntu or sikhwama sakhe. It will be very important to know if that person was cleansed, exalted, joined with ancestors and broughtback home (wagezwa, wakhushulwa, waphakamiswa, wahlanganiswa nemndeni) phele ngeke utfwasele edlotini lelimnyama lingazange lentiwa konkhe loko that person must be cleansed. Some have already become sangoma and tinyanga but don’t know the process i’m talking about (Kugezwa, kukhushulwa, kuhlanganiswa, nemndeni, kubuyiswa ekhaya). And it will also be very important for you to know if tikwama or Imituntu yakhe yagezwa yini? Because it must be cleansed and you must also be joined to them before you can start working. You cannot be initiated into an unclean spirit if you want to be a real healer of people. You will also need to be cleansed from the death of that particular person if you were not. Sometimes you find out that your ancestors wanted you Kutsi (Ubageze, ubakhuphule, ubangenise emndenini, ubabuyise ekhaya hhayi kutsi uyotfwasa). You just need to cleanse, exalt, join them with the family and bring them back home not for you to be initiated into being sangoma or inyanga. Most ancestors these days have not undergone such since they have died, especially in the Townships. Most Township people only do tombstones that’s all and tombstones have no spiritual significance to our ancestors, it’s just a waste of money and showing off most of the time. It’s difficult these days for initiates to be directed to the right place for initiation. Some tinyanga are now able to induce one with certain muti so that you can dream of them and their place for Kutfwasa. And for those with Inzuza its more difficult because they are supposed to be initiated under the water, but now if such happens you won’t come back because of ignorance among us and your family. People who have rightly undergone kutfwasa will also be able to heal people and the ancestors themselves will bring people to be healed, and you won’t go hungry if you are real ly called by the ancestors to heal people. All the spirits that are for kutfwasa have certain characteristics and you can tfwasa in the spirit only if you are related to it.
All the spirits are associated to a nation, have a name, have a culture, have a language and have a tree (impande). You will need to identify all these things before ungene ephehlweni. The duration of ephehlweni will always depend to the spirit you have, it won’t be size one fits all. A person who has Umndawe or Inzuza if  initiated properly must definitely be able to Femba people. Umndawe is for kufemba not ematsambo. When you are under initiation you need eat the right ligobongo as per your spirit,use proper lihlambo inline with your spirit,use proper libaso and each spirit has its ligobongo, lihlambo and libaso. Even after initiation, such must be continually used as they are the food of the spirit and can keep your spirit happy and perform very well. A person with Umndawe and Inzuza must always have such and also lidvumane is very important as it gives joy to Umndawe and Inzuza. I don’t take a gobela who cannot kufemba seriouslly, especially if the gobela is initiating for Umndawe or Inzuza. So many bogobela have wasted time for ematfwasa giving them wrong impande they don’t even have lihlambo, libaso, lidvumane and ligobongo for Umndawe and Inzuza and there is a special way for Kuparula such spirits. Those who have Abalozi will struggle to find right liphehlo because most tinyanga with such spirit have converted to religion. At least we still have very good bogobela for Umndawe, Inzuza and Umnguni , because our people have become more ignorant about what must be done when someone has been taken by Inzuza it’s recommended now that you just get a gobela who knows it very well to initiate you, and who knows how to Parula Inzuza well in the water. There are special muti from the river that one must eat if they have Inzuza for the spirit to work well. At least it’s not easy for Umndawe and Inzuza to be converted into Isithunywa.
