Cormecial Hip HOp is the strongest right now, in terms of getting to the people.

I’m not an authority on the subject matter but I think that the Hip Hop as a musical extension of inner city angst has taken a detour and resembles very little of what it was known to have stood for in it’s inception. It’s not the only genre of music that has been tagged as ‘dead’. Jazz also went through a period where it was said to have ‘died’. During all the ‘madness’ there are those that continue to represent what is said to be ‘real’ Hip Hop. The likes of the Last Emperor, The Roots, Immortal Technique, Zubz amongst others. We must also remember that Hip Hop doesnt operate exclusively outside the economic implications of everyday life and people get into Hip Hop for various reasons. It’s up to consumers and ‘activists’ to demand a better representation of Hip Hop from it’s practitioners. The Least Emperor reminds us that “you give up freedom when you surender”.
