The Blackhouse Kollective – Soweto invites members of the media to the third annual BHK Decolonial Winter School, a powerful five-day gathering of scholars, learners, artists, and activists exploring Black Consciousness, Pan-Africanism, and decolonial futures.
Taking place from 29 July to 2 August 2025, the Winter School is unlike any ordinary academic or political event. It brings together intergenerational voices, from high school learners to world renowned scholars, to engage with the legacies of Zondeni Sobukwe, Malcolm X, Patrice Lumumba, and Frantz Fanon through lectures, poetry, community dialogues, music, drumming, and art.
The theme for this year is ‘Drumming Up Revolution: A Centenary Celebration and Decolonial Praxis in Honour of Malcolm X, Lumumba, and Fanon’.
In a time of ongoing debates about identity, justice, education, and African self-determination, the Decolonial Winter School presents a fresh and radical space where theory, memory, culture, and grassroots activism meet.

advocate - Prof Nelson Maldonado-Torres: Scholar of decoloniality and global justice
- Dr Panashe Chigumadzi: Celebrated author and cultural critic
- Dr Nomathamsanqa Tisani: Educationist and scholar on African women’s narratives
- Vangile Gantsho, Kush Mahleka, Azah Mphago and Gontse Makhene and more poets,
drummers, musicians, and theatre-makers - Partnering schools are Aurora Girls High, Deep Dale Secondary, Thaba Jabula High and Musi High.
- Each session includes youth contributions, community conversations, and artistic tributes, creating
a vibrant space for Black cultural and intellectual expression.
