Artist biography
My name is Lerato Motaung and i was born in Katlehong, Johannesburg, in 1991 and raised in Lekgalong, Rustenburg. I went to a public school where by art was not part of my school subject. In 2008, I started practicing art with Johannesburg Art Gallery and that’s where I started to obtain a formal training in drawing. In 2009, I did sculptures with the local artists in Katlehong Art Centre and afterwards I enrolled with Tshwane University of Technology to pursue my studies in Fine Art. My work attempts to capture essence of the human condition mainly through a realistic portrayal of history and postmodern life. I utilize a range of different kinds of mediums to execute my art works.
Artists’ statement
My artworks take a significant sight of socio political issues. In my work, I deconstruct and depict the life style of different kinds of people. My work reproduces familiar visual images, arranging them into new theoretically coated pieces. While I use a large quantity of materials and processes in each project my methodology is consistent. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects they are linked by recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. My work strives to reveal the aspects of history, which have a great impact on our post-modern culture till today. In the current climate where many believe history has no relevance, I find myself persistently returning to those aspects that are often hidden or misrepresented in the “official” recordings for posterity. I believe that the traits I possess have helped grow my concepts on artistic expression, and thus have helped me convey my message through my art easily. Also, with my Art always being centred around issues that affect the entire society directly and indirectly, it makes it more appealing, universal, relevant and then acts as an expressive embodiment of history.
