A proverb is a simple and concrete saying, popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or experience. They are often metaphorical. A proverb that describes a basic rule of conduct may also be known as a maxim. In 1999 I was invited by the Alliance Française to do a workshop in Brest. The project was to illustate African proverbs. I have since continued the series which is collected in these pages.You are encouraged to use this journal to reflect on the meanings and find insight and inspiration from the illustrations and text.
