My name is Navel Seakamela born in Soshanguve, Pretoria, in 1991 raised in Tembisa, Johannesburg, first born in the family of three. I went to public school which I studied engineering graphics and design and practiced art as my hobby during 2007 until 2010 were I practiced fine art full time in Tembisa art Centre for a year and got to study fine and applied art in Tshwane University of Pretoria In 2012. My work consists of themes such as isolation, alienation and depression amongst our generation and it capture the raw scenes which are mostly ignored and hidden with in our society.
Artists’ statement
My current work continues the investigation of isolation of consumer society; depict themes of isolation, alienation and pressure on the society yet on the individuals leads to depression. I always try to depict activities that are happening around Africans and yet being ignored or never been taken into consideration, including the hidden lifestyle of those unrecognized amongst the society. I created conceptual works that expose raw life styles of our generation in the institutions and the public, using verity of mediums that I can get my hands on.
My work during the past 5 yeas, which have a profound impact on our contemporary culture today and the viewers has increasingly enlightened due to our social and contemporary meltdown, I find myself overcoming some obstacles relating to our infrastructure due to my research and art. In my varied and diverse approaches to making art; installations; 2 dimensions, 3 dimensions, projects, the context of the work has an impact on the work’s relationship to the viewer.
